Juan Fernando Gutiérrez has been honored several times with audience awards for his versatile acting talent. International critics have described his vocal performances in reviews from numerous countries across Europe, Asia, and South America as those of a "beautiful-voiced, warm bel canto baritone." For over 25 years, the opera and concert singer has dedicated himself to the interpretation of major Mozart and bel canto roles on worldwide stages, as well as an extensive concert repertoire including numerous lieder, masses, and oratorios.
The Austrian baritone with Colombian roots began his vocal studies in Colombia with Danaila Hristova and settled in Vienna in 2002. At the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, he studied voice with KS Margarita Lilowa and Prof. Ralf Döring, and Lied and Oratorio with KS Robert Holl. In 2009, he successfully completed his studies with the academic degree Magister artium (Mag. art.). His artistic training was enriched through collaboration with figures such as Prof. Gerald Kahry, KS Hilde Zadek, KS Eliane Coelho, and KS Wicus Slabbert in Austria, as well as through international masterclasses with KS Peter Gugaloff in Germany, KS Montserrat Caballé in Spain, and Franco Pagliazzi in Italy.
Parallel to his stage career, he completed the University Course in Cultural Management at the Institute for Cultural Management of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, graduating in 2023 with a Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) with the grade "Excellent." He solidified his pedagogical expertise in 2019 through the Voice Pedagogy Certificate (GPZ) from the Federal Association of German Voice Educators (BDG), as well as through specialized further training with Judith Limbacher and Gudrun Ayasse in Germany.
Gutiérrez made his opera debut in Colombia as Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, followed by the role of Orfeo in Ch. W. Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice. At the Colombian Opera, he debuted the roles of Dr. Malatesta in Don Pasquale, Lescaut in J. Massenet's Manon, and Guglielmo in Così fan tutte.
From 2010 to 2012, he was a member of the ensemble at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich. There, he performed key roles in his fach, such as Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, Dr. Falke in Die Fledermaus, Ottokar in Der Freischütz, Taddeo in L'italiana in Algeri, Morales in Carmen, Stefano in Viva la Mamma, and the role of Magus in the Munich world premiere of the opera Joseph Süß by Detlev Glanert.
From 2012 to 2015, he was an ensemble member at Theater Münster. There, he expanded his repertoire with numerous significant roles, including Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Fieramosca in Benvenuto Cellini, Schaunard in La Bohème, Morales in Carmen, Baron Douphol in La Traviata, Tracolino in Pergolesi's Il maestro di musica, the Hotel Manager in Hindemith’s Neues vom Tage, and again the Magus in Joseph Süß. Additionally, he appeared with the Münster Symphony Orchestra as the baritone soloist in Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. Due to his great success as Papageno in Die Zauberflöte and outstanding reviews, he returned to Münster as a guest for this role for a third consecutive season in 2016.
Important engagements have taken him to various festivals, such as with Neue Oper Wien to Zwolle/Holland for the International Chamber Opera Festival in the contemporary version of the opera Orfeo by Ch. Cech, to the Haydn Festival in Eisenstadt under the direction of Adam Fischer (as Pluto in L’anima del Filosofo), as well as to the Wiener Festwochen and to Bulgaria for Zemlinsky’s Lyrische Symphonie under Georgi Dimitrov. In Hiroshima, Japan, he sang the baritone part in Beethoven's 9th Symphony with the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra under Kazufumi Yamashita in 2009, which was produced as a DVD.
With the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen, Gutiérrez gave various concerts at the Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen, the Ruhrfestspielhaus Recklinghausen, and the Stadthalle Unna. Guest engagements also took him as Stefano in Viva la Mamma to Theater Krefeld Mönchengladbach and to the concert hall of the Cologne Philharmonie. He celebrated great successes as Papageno at the Stadttheater Ingolstadt and at the Prinzregententheater in Munich. In 2018, he debuted as Bill in Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny in a co-production of the Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires, the Teatro Municipal de Santiago (Chile), and the Teatro Mayor in Bogotá.
Gutiérrez is a finalist and prize winner of numerous competitions, including Klassikmania 2005 and the International Hilde Zadek Voice Competition 2009. He won 1st Prize, the Gold Medal, and the "Osamu Uno" Prize at the 10th International Music Competition in Osaka, Japan, in 2009. In addition to the Audience Award of the Otto Edelmann Society (2009), he received the Audience Award for his performance as Figaro in Osaka that same year. In 2014, he was awarded the audience prize "Volksbühnentaler" at Theater Münster for his outstanding artistic achievements as Papageno and Fieramosca.
As an integral part of the Viennese music scene, Juan Fernando Gutiérrez regularly performs as a guest with the Vienna Mozart Orchestra on the city’s most prestigious stages – including the Vienna State Opera, the Golden Hall of the Musikverein, and the Great Hall of the Konzerthaus. Since his debut at the Musikverein in 2016, he has performed there for ten consecutive years in roles such as Don Giovanni, Figaro, and Papageno, and will continue this successful activity into 2026.
